Nokia and Software AG Cooperate to Create WAP Solutions for Mobile Electronic Business

Nokia Corporation of Helsinki, Finland and Software AG of Darmstadt, Germany are cooperating on the development and marketing of WAP solutions that will make existing business applications accessible to mobile phone users. This agreement marks another important milestone in creating mobile communications solutions forenterprises . Concrete results from this co-operation will be released on the market later this year.

Using Software AG's integration software, any enterprise can extend the Nokia WAP Server based solutions to be able to initiate business transactions and access enterprise data via mobile phones without extensive additional work. Software AG and Nokia will meet future challenges by working together in various ways, including coordinated development efforts, in addition to thesemarketing and sales initiative.

The market forces that are currently driving WAP technology will generate a dramatic increase in mobile business applications. To gain maximum benefit from this development, organizations must integrate their mobile business applications with existing IT infrastructures. Software AG delivers the crucial link that connects Nokia's WAP server with existing applications, for example those already used by banks, insurance companies, and airlines, among others. "This is the first technology that delivers seamless integration of mobile agents with enterprise computing, allowing true business transactions using a mobile device such as a mobile phone," states Dr. Helmut Wilke, Member of Software AG's Board of Management.

"We expect the leading enterprises to come up with completely new WAP applications leveraging existing IT Infrastructures," says Gerhard Romen, Vice President Sales & Marketing of Nokia Wireless Software Solutions. "In principle, any type of transaction that can be initiated today over a PC will in the future be possible using a mobile telephone. A mobile telephone will become a terminal for universal multimedia services," he states.

Nokia, as one of the founding companies of the WAP Forum (the specification body with over 200 member companies), has had a head start for WAP product development. Nokia was the first company to launch a WAP phone, the Nokia 7110, and also the first company to launch a WAP server for corporate solutions, the Nokia WAP Server.

The new, jointly developed software solutions are already demonstrated today in the Systems -99 fair in Munich. They are currently being tested and will be released to the market this year as an additional feature to Software AG's product EntireX.
