PHONE.COM DELIVERS UP.LINK SERVER RELEASE 4; PROVIDES LEADING EDGE, ROBUST WAP SOLUTION FOR WIRELESS NETWORK OPERATORS

Scalable, International, and Interoperable - UP.Link Server R4 Supports Widest Selection of Handsets in the Industry Redwood City, Calif. (October 6, 1999) ¾ Phone.com Inc. (NASDAQ: PHCM) today announced the delivery of Release 4 of the UP.Link™ Server to a number of network operators, providing a robust, Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) V1.1-compliant solution to wireless network operators. The R4 UP.Link Server, the latest in a series of platform advancements from Phone.com, will allow wireless network operators to deliver Internet and intranet service and applications to screens of wireless phones equipped with a compatible microbrowser such as the Phone.com™ UP.Browser™ microbrowser. With over 25 handset manufacturers licensing the UP.Browser microbrowser from Phone.com, as well as interoperability agreements with Nokia and Ericsson, the R4 UP.Link Server supports the widest selection of handsets in the industry.

The debut of the R4 UP.Link Server sets another milestone for Phone.com in its role as a co-founder of the WAP Forum. Building on the commercial success of the R3 UP.Link Server, which was the first commercial server to deliver WML 1.1 content to browser-enabled handsets, R4 UP.Link Server adds support for WAP 1.1 compliant handsets.

R4 UP.Link Server can deliver WML 1.1 content to any WAP 1.1-compliant handset, as well as existing UP.Browser-enabled handsets. Phone.com's promise of backward compatibility means that R4 UP.Link Server can also deliver existing HDML content to these handsets, giving network operators the ability to support the broadest selection of wireless Internet applications available. Based on Phone.com's commitment to WAP interoperability, the R4 UP.Link Server has been extensively tested with Nokia's 7110 WAP-enabled handset.

Additional features of R4 UP.Link Server include support for a Local Application Environment in handsets, allowing subscribers to use their applications even when out of coverage. R4 UP.Link Server also includes the Web Message Service (WMS), providing support for delivering simple Web content to SMS handsets, allowing network operators to immediately offer Internet services to their entire subscriber base.

Trials of the R4 UP.Link Server are already under way at over ten different network operators, utilizing these advanced features:

Web Message Service (WMS): Provides a simple way to offer Internet content to subscribers who are using legacy two-way SMS handsets. Subscribers issue simple SMS requests such as "NEWS" to view headline news and "QUOTE PHCM" to request a stock quote for Phone.com. WMS allows SMS-only subscribers to sample Internet content services, generating interest in full WAP solutions and handsets.

Dynamic Scalable Server Architecture (DSSA): Based on Phone.com's years of deployment experience, the DSSA design has evolved to meet the demanding requirements of wireless network operators for reliability, performance and scalability. To support a growing subscriber base, DSSA enables network operators to add CPU's to their existing servers or add more servers, increasing the processing power of the UP.Link Server.

Security and Authentication: Addressing the stringent security requirements of banks and brokerage firms, UP.Link WAP Gateway provides a network-independent, end-to-end security model that employs the WAP WTLS standard over the wireless network and uses Internet standard SSL/TLS for communication with a Web server.

Locale Support Services: Using the Unicode standard, Locale Support Services provides support for multibyte character sets and offers character transcoding, enabling Web site content to be properly mapped to the character set in the handset. Using these built-in features, the UP.Link WAP Gateway has already been successfully localized in countries around the world including France, Italy, Japan and Korea.

System Administration: The UP.Link WAP Gateway provides transaction logging of all subscriber activity so that network operators can track system usage and prepare billing information. All provisioning, system administration, and system monitoring tools are also provided by the UP.Link Administration package.
