Ericsson applauds the recent decision by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) which established a comprehensive set of terrestrial and satellite radio interface specifications for third generation communications, or IMT- 2000.
The specifications will allow performance optimization in a wide range of radio operating environments. They are designed to give operators of current networks the flexibility they need to evolve their existing systems to 3G service capabilities, as well as providing for the needs of operators of new networks.
"The decision represents the very positive culmination of more than a decade of work by groups and individuals from across the telecommunications industry," said Dr. Jan Uddenfeldt, Senior Vice President - Technology at Ericsson. "The goal of 3G is true global, mobile multimedia access, regardless of the location or technology used. The significance of this decision lies in the fact that it paves the way for the rapid roll-out of 3G systems and services and allows for migration according to market requirements and individual operators' business strategies."
The five terrestrial radio interface standards are:
