Lernout & Hauspie licenses Linguistic Technologies to Symbian

L&H Linguistic Technologies to be integrated into the Symbian platform designed for Wireless Information Devices; Agreement Extends Reach of L&H Technologies to Emerging Market for Non-PC Internet Devices

Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ: LHSPF, EASDAQ: LHSP) (L&H™), a worldwide market leader in speech and linguistic technologies, products and services, today announced that it has licensed its language technologies to Symbian, the leading platform provider for Wireless Information Devices. Symbian has integrated L&H’s linguistic technologies into its platform, whose licensees include Ericsson, Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, Philips and Psion. This agreement helps to expand L&H’s technologies to the fast growing worldwide market for Smartphones and other Internet-enabled consumer devices.

"L&H recognizes the potential of Smartphones and other Internet-access devices in the coming years and therefore views this agreement as a significant market opportunity," said Gerald Calabrese, senior vice president of worldwide sales for L&H’s Technologies and Solutions Division. "Today’s announcement with Symbian, a recognized leader in the development of platforms for Wireless Information Devices, demonstrates how L&H’s language tools can provide added intelligence to non-PC computing platforms."

Symbian licensed both L&H’s International CorrectSpell® and the Intellifinder® Reference Engine technologies. Both technologies use sophisticated text analysis to more accurately determine spelling errors in text and incorporate indexing, key word referencing and general information management functionality in applications.

"Wireless Information Devices will become the primary and most influential networked devices to drive customers into the mobile PostPC market, providing new opportunities for providers of wireless networked services and applications," said Juha Christensen, Executive Vice President, Symbian. "These devices, enabled by the Symbian platform, will extend the functionality that end users have come to expect in a desktop environment. L&H’s language technologies will help meet those expectations."

The L&H technologies licensed to Symbian are included in the current generation of the Symbian platform. Providing key commercial and technological advantages for manufacturers of Wireless Information Devices, the Symbian platform provides an operating system, customizable user interfaces, color support, fit-for-purpose application suites, advanced Internet connectivity, and officially accredited and award-winning PC connectivity software.
