Spain’s Mobile Operator Airtel selects Siemens and Phone.com to supply commercial WAP platform

Siemens and Phone.com, Inc. (Nasdaq:PHCM) announced that Spain’s GSM Operator Airtel Móvil has awarded Siemens Information and Communication Networks Group to implement a commercial WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) platform for innovative wireless Internet based services. Under the terms of the agreement, Siemens will provide Airtel a complete WAP solution, including the Phone.com UP.Link server suite, which will allow Airtel to provide innovative wireless Internet services to its mobile customers already starting in late 1999. Being a turn–key provider, Siemens will implement a complete WAP solution comprising all infrastructure components, WAP platform and WAP applications.

Siemens will integrate Phone.com's UP.Link server solution into Airtel’s GSM network which will enable Airtel to offer mobile customers easy access to a broad variety of Airtel‘s online information services and applications. The services can be accessed through mobile phones equipped with a WAP–browser.
