StreamServe 2.3 also includes expanded XML capabilities that enable businesses to use a variety of XML schemas to communicate with their business partners. Using StreamServe 2.3, which interfaces seamlessly with business systems, such as SAP, Baan, Oracle, QAD and Intentia, users will now be able to route business critical information from an enterprise application server directly to a customer, business partner or employee's cellular phone or pager using the Short Message Service protocol. Before it is routed, the information is formatted and personalized to provide only the information each receiver needs. For example, corporate executives can use their cellular phones to request information, such as order statuses and P&L reports, directly from the business application, greatly improving timely access to mission critical business information.

According to an article in The AMR Alert on Enterprise Technology Strategies, November 3, 1999, "The wireless support in version 2.3 is a nice addition to the product suite. Pervasive computing is changing the landscape for software vendors. Corporations are looking for ways to leverage wireless technology for business advantage, and providing wireless support is becoming a key differentiator for vendors. With this latest release, StreamServe should be well positioned to capitalize on this market."

"We've always been about providing our customers with solutions on how to leverage their investment in business applications," explains Christer Berg, president, StreamServe North America. "With StreamServe 2.2, we gave them a way to format output so that it's readable, easy to understand and personalized, in a number of formats across a wide range of channels. StreamServe 2.3 is taking that one step further by offering pervasive communications as another output channel so companies and their customers always have access to the information they need to do business."

The wireless output is the first step in what Berg envisions to be a continued dedication to pervasive computing as a means of enterprise application business communications. "We're currently developing WAP- and Palm Pilot-enabled output solutions," he says, "and we expect to roll them out over the next few months."

Enhanced XML Capabilities In addition to the SMS functionality, StreamServe 2.3 also has several other unique features, including XMLOUT, which supports Microsoft's BizTalk to enable businesses to choose the XML-based format, or schema, they want to use when sending information to its business partners. Companies can choose from a variety of XML schemas, including Common Business Library and Commerce XML (cXML).

"StreamServe's ability to convert input from business application systems into an expanded variety of XML schemas allows businesses to use the Internet to customize communication to meet their customers' and business partners' needs," says Berg.

Expanded Processing Monitoring Functionality StreamServe 2.3 also contains a new module that enables IT managers to monitor StreamServe's document formatting and distribution processes from the Web. The module also allows IT managers to track the status of jobs being performed by the StreamServe server and to define "alerts" on events that are specific to them. Once an event occurs, the software delivers the information to the IT manager's cellular phone or pager.

The software is being sold indirectly through StreamServe's business partners and alliances and directly through StreamServe.

About Intelligent Output Management Intelligent Output Management (IOM) is a rapidly growing software category driven by the need for companies to communicate more effectively with their customers and business partners. IOM software seamlessly interfaces with business application systems to intercept outbound business critical processes such as invoicing, billing and purchasing. In the IOM software, customers can then add intelligence to their customer and business partner communications by formatting, personalizing and distributing information based on their individual needs. In doing so, companies can establish a high level of customer service and generate competitive advantages.
