Sweden's Europolitan signs contract for Nokia GPRS Network

Nokia and Europolitan of Sweden have signed a contract for the delivery of a Nokia GPRS Network.

The contract for the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) Network, a platform for mobile data services, includes a GPRS core network and upgrade of Base Station Subsystem, Mobile Switching Centre and Network Management System.

Deliveries have commenced with a full commercial upgrade taking place during spring 2000.

This is the latest deal in a long relationship between Nokia and Europolitan - in 1992 Nokia provided Europolitan with a complete GSM 900 network. Now the Europolitan GSM 900/1800 network covers approximately 96 per cent of the Swedish population. And, using the Nokia Short Message Service Center, Europolitan was the first operator to offer short messaging in 1993. Earlier this year Europolitan was first in the world to launch high-speed data 43,2 kbit/s.

"Europolitan chose GPRS because it is a natural step in expanding our wireless data services. As a mobile operator and service provider GPRS opens up new business opportunities and ways to generate revenue with value-added services, " said Tomas Isaksson President and CEO of Europolitan.

"Nokia was chosen as supplier because of its ability to deliver a carrier class scaleable core GPRS solution to meet our pre-commercial and commercial deployment needs," added Magnus Forsbrand, Vice President, Engineering & Operations, Europolitan.

"Nokia is proud to deliver its GPRS Network to Europolitan. GPRS is an essential stepping stone to 3rd Generation personal multimedia services on the Swedish market," said Seppo Rantakokko Managing Director of Nokia Networks in Sweden.

GPRS brings IP based, packet switched connections to the GSM network, allowing faster and easier Internet access to mobile mass market. It also serves as an ideal bearer for WAP, enabling a variety of new mobile applications. Currently Nokia is the leading GPRS vendor.
