TIM ANNOUNCES THE FIRST APPLET INTEROPERABILITY TEST BASED ON SIM CARDS

At Cartes 99 today, TIM demonstrated the first cardlet interoperability project. The trial shows how a SIMToolkit application written in JAVA 2.1 and compliant with ETSI 03.19 specification can work on different SIM Cards. This solution is a result of the strategic partnership with Oberthur Card Systems and Schlumberger, two of the major smart card suppliers and with CSELT (Telecom Italia Research Center).

Last April, TIM launched SIMToolkit services on its "Super Power 16K" SIM card thereby offering all customers a complete set of applications to access information services (SCRIPTIM, Banking services, Prepaid and E-mail management) in a user-friendly environment.

The aim of the common project project is to demonstrate the benefits deriving from interoperability as seen from a Network Operator's point of view such, mainly the ability to reduce time to market of new VAS. The technology adopted could work both on the SIMERA platform from Schlumberger and the SIMphonIC V2 card from Oberthur. The advantage of developping applications following standards and interoperable rules allows Network Operators to increase the number of applications offered to their customers while simplifying the specification process and the testing phase. In the near future, the customer will be able to choose a specific application among a wide range of services and download it directly onto the SIM card in order to run it. This new paradigm of "Self Marketing" enables each customer to chose, on his own, the set of services to be hosted on the SIM card based on his specific needs and the opportunity to replace or upgrade them as soon new applets or new versions become available.

These new techniques will also guarantee that Network Operators can enhance their offerings to satisfy customer needs.
