Cahners In-Stat Group forecasts the number of wireless data users within the enterprise segment will grow from 784,000 in 1999 to nearly nine million in 2003. As a percentage of total wireless traffic market, it is expected there will be nearly 24 million wireless data users by 2003.
"The wireless voice market has continued to explode for many years based primarily on pure price campaigns," said Becky Diercks, director with Cahners In-Stat Group. "With data, carriers will have to work harder to earn the business because data is more complex and difficult to sell. We expect the large business/enterprise market will be a key driver of the wireless data market as they transition from primarily niche-oriented, vertical market applications to horizontal applications such as Internet access for 'pull' content, e-mail, database access and fax."
