The future of online wireless terminals means huge amounts of money for the winners in the marketplace
And therefore there is a big payoff from dominating the (industry) standards
So i do not think WAP version 1.2 is the final solution for wireless data
I expect a lot of initiatives to try to dominate the standards for wireless data

WAP has got huge industry support, and I were among the few people that believed in wap from the initial beginning
That that does not mean that there will be other standards in the marketplace
Even though Microsoft and Palm are members of the WAP forum, I am shure that they will push other protocols

I took a brief look at the MAL protocol from Avantgo, and my conclusion is:
- WAP is a industry effort to make a complete standard for wireless applications and content that can be used on small, wireless terminals
- MAL is a simple protocol, where Avantgo try to define an industry standard for syncronisation between a wireless device and a server

There will be some overlap between the two, but MAL need much more to be a complete solution to compte with wap.
At the same time WAP is not tailored to synchronisation.
So for wireless applications, which normally work standalone, and synchronise with a network sever when online, can use the Avantgo protocol
I do not know what support MAL has today. If anyone has any inforamtion, please reply to this comment

I hope this gave you some brief answer

You should not expect that there will be one stable solution for this are for a long time
Be prepared for a wery dynamic market

Tore

: Hi !

: Could you please help me and explain the difference between WAP and Avantgo's MAL.

: To me the two technologies seems to be full competitors, or am I totally wrong?

: I know Microsoft and PUMA owns parts of Avantgo, do they or MAL have a chance against WAP?
: Whats best and why?
: Have a wonderful day!

: Regards Kristian
