Hello Euginio

At CeBIT, Symbian and SUN announced an agreement to incorporate JAVA into the Symbian (EPOC) operating system:

"Hannover, Germany - March 17th, 1999 - At CeBIT today, Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Symbian announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to incorporate Java technology, designed specifically for the wireless market, as part of Symbian's standard EPOC platform solution. This joint initiative, which is subject to further negotiation and the closing of a definitive agreement, is expected to benefit between 40 and 60 million users of Wireless Information Devices within the next five years."

Symbian will be designed both for phone centric (see Ericsson press release) and internet centric wireless terminals.

So a result of this must a java virtual machine on top of the symbian operating system? The press release do not say anything about JINI, but I believe that JINI, in combination with bluetooth for local wireless access will be a very powerful combination for wireless devices. Then Jini can be used to access local services, where the wireless phone can lookup services in your car, at home, at the hotel, using local wireless access, without using the wireless network.

I have not looked into the details of JINI, so I would be very interested into expert opinions on this opportunity.

: I don't think Jini can be implemented in a mobile phone because it needs a Java Virtual Machine in
: order to run. Maybe, the use of a Jini proxy will solve the problem. I think Sun would like to implement the Jini
: architecture in the fixed part of the network allowing the dynamic creation of services. But use Java RMI to communicate among distributed network nodes will be very complex. What about Inferno Styx communication protocol? I think it's the best suited one for this purpose!
