: How are Wap Servers physically connected? What are the interface or protocols used? Where can the Wap Servers be connected within the whole system? Is it in the switching office of the wireless network or in the ISP? Hope someone could help me regarding these things.

How WAP Servers are connected:
------------------------------
WAP Servers are connected to a gateway (WAP gateway). Unlike web servers, this is absolutely necessary to ensure security, and to provide the correct addressing to the different networks:
- Public Land Mobile Networks (PLMN), connected
by an Access Server.
- Internet, external WAP servers, coonected by a Firewall.

This is the usual configuration:
PLMN <--> (Access Server, Web Server WML Enabled, WAP Application Server, Wap Gateway, Firewall) <--> (Internet)

Where they are connected:
------------------------

Since WAP is made available by GSM operator, in real time is important to take special care about the connection to the Mobile Operator.
And it may depend a lot on the predicted amount of traffic. If you want to be a WAP service provider, you will do the following: 1- predict the number of users that will access your WAP Server. 2- calculate the necessary bandwith to alocate them. 3- Choose the access method 4- Contact the network operator that will make available your link through a mobile phone.

The operator may even recommend you to connect a dedicated line as close as possible to their switching system if you expect much traffic, since all the systems involved here can be simple Unix machines. Then a special line to the operator might be very expensive, compared to them.

But, in fact the machines can be almost anywhere, if the connection to the operator does not concern you.

Connecting to an ISP is the easiest thing.
This would be a normal Internet Service Provider.
Because the access to WAP servers through internet should be very fast, only to allow the user some sevice personalization, then it is not a big issue: you do not need, any sopecial connection, so the distance is not important.

With cumpliments,
