emulators vs. phones

Sorry if this is a newbie mistake, but I am having problems resolving emulator vs actual phone activity. I have set up some valid WML files, and configured mime types on the server as indicated for the various wml related files. I am able to get accurate results in every simulator I have checked no problem (whether installed emulators or remote applet emulators). I also get accurate results when using emulators on other machines.
The problem is that on an actual cell phone, I am getting content-type errors - and can't display any files. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?
