: Hello Tore

: I'll try my best to explain how wap works

: First of all, WAP is made to be as similar to the internet architecture as possible.
: All content that you access from your wap browser is stored on a web server.
: The content on the server is addressed using a url, e.g http://www.mobic.com/index.wml (does not exist, yet)
: Normally, a wap phone will be preset to load a standard page, the same way as an internet browser
: Initially I believe that the operator wap home page will be the default start page
: The startpage will then point to other services, using url's to address other services (on the same or another server)
: If you want to access other services, you will be able to choose another url.
: I suppose all wap phones will enable the user to manually input url's
: Entering a url from a phone is not easy, and I believe that most wap service providers will let you use the internet to personalise your services
: The result of the personalisation will then be available as a list of services on your phone
: When you use the service on the phone, you will not see the url's, only the service names and hierarchy

: To access wap services, you will use some communication to the wap gateway
: Wap supports many carrier technologies, among them are SMS and GSM data (and similar carriers for other wireless networks)
: If SMS is used, the browser will compress your request using WAP compression techniques.
: The request is then sent to the gateway, which translates the request to a standard http request, and send it to the web server using the url
: The response is sent back to the gateway, which encode the content using SMS, and send it back to the WAP phone, which displays the result
: If GSM data is used, a connection is established before the dialog between the client and gateway/server is started.
: On the terminal side of the gateway, wap protocols are used
: On the internet side of the gateway, standard internet protocols are used
: The data connection is set up automatically as a result of the request from the user. There will normally not be any manual setup. But, different terminals will handle this different.
: For GSM, there will be a packet network called GPRS coming into operation next year
: GPRS will be perfect for WAP, with GPRS you do not need to set up a connection, packets will be sent and received whenever needed.

: I hope this explanation answers some of your questions.

: I have added a link to a short system description of wap

: Regards

: Tore

: : Many regards
