It is not hard to chat using wap, it's just to write a wap chat client, just like you would implement a chat html client.
But the question is whether it will be used much on todays tricky and expensive wireless data lines.
But for the future, I think mobile chatting, using wap, java or whatever, will be a very popular wap application
